From Concept to Tangible: Ya Pa Lat Chair

Setting the Basics

Our first dining chair had to be something special. We started thinking about common Burmese dining experiences on dichotomous spectrums--tradition and contemporary, rigidity and fluidity, abstract and familiarity, muted and statement. The aesthetic personality we wanted our Ya Pa Lat to embody had to synthesize with the emotional and functional elements that a chair should bring to a person looking at it, sitting on it, even taking pictures with it.

A key element that we felt was predominantly missing in many Myanmar dining chairs, was ‘comfort chic.’ Chairs that were comfortable were not minimal in design or were just minimally boring. Chairs that were chic were too commercial and catered to a very niche, slightly more posh taste. We wanted Ya Pa Lat to be comfortable and chic, that was also accessible and familiar.

Research & Prototyping

For the overall body and frame of Ya Pa Lat, we were most inspired by BluDot’s Wicker Chair. We loved how it was attractive from the back as it was from the front. The minimal frame would require only using a more modest amount of wood--consistent with our sustainability ethos at 16’96 Concepts.

We did not want to add arms to the chair for two reasons; conceptually not having arms was closer to the ‘comfort chic’ look we were trying to achieve. More practically, we wanted the feasibility of sitting cross-legged on a dining chair--for millennials craving those mid-week wine sessions or families who take their Monopoly nights seriously.

Crafting its Final Form

There were multiple challenges along the way, especially in the construction of tufted upholstery and fitting it right to the barely noticeable curvature of the backseat. We worked through several rounds of production samples - refining the right density of the foam, solving manufacturing issues, tweaking curvature proportions of the frame, and adjusting finishes - until we got to the final product.

Our goal in crafting Ya Pa Lat was to create a chair that gives you the ultimate comfort, but also one that was capable in making an almost nonchalant statement. With its gentle recline and tufted seating, Ya Pa Lat promises a relaxed repose.
