Designing Flat Pack #1696BEDS

2020. The Year of the Rat. The Year where we make things happen.

What better way to start off by doing what we always wanted to do -- designing flat-pack beds. With a generational shift in lifestyle and a constant desire for style-led interiors, we want to take on a fresh approach where function, form, and beauty don’t have to be compromised for durability and higher quality materials.

Designing. Sketching. Prototyping.

Our blank canvas started with thematic, unique styles that each of our collections possess. Designing for the classic, warm vibes of Et Kayar to the more multifunctional needs of Pann Collection, we set off to create designs that will fit the families we already had.

La Ka Lay Bed

started off being the go-to classic bed. Not that it wasn’t beautiful but we also didn’t want our first beds to be anywhere near boring or safe. We added upholstery for comfort and color. We played around with the right incline to make La Ka Lay feel modern and ergonomic.

Za Myin Zwe Bed

We wanted the second design to be more edgy, but still look modern and minimal. We are the antithesis to traditional furniture in that we reject anything bulky or designs that carry too much visual weight. Designing the right kind of simplicity was not an easy task.

With Za Myin Zwe Bed, we explored what happens when we mix different types of wood and what color-blocking does to a piece of furniture.

The Bei Dar Bed was the final one we worked on, and was also the trickiest. How do we create a bed that fulfills versatile needs? Did we want the bed to be foldable? Did we want the bed to have storage? Anything was game. After many design deep-dives, we came up with a Queen-sized Low Bed. Low beds are a cult favorite for families with young children, but moreover, it makes your bedroom feel larger because it adds more height to a bedroom.

Bei Dar Bed

To arrive at the designs we now can finally share with the world, it was truly a labor of love from our Product Designer, Ko Phyo Thoon Zaw, and our Shop team. From designing flat-pack manuals to organizing focus groups, we did it all! Our 16’96 Beds are Myanmar’s first fully holistic flat-pack furniture in a box, and we are dang proud of it.

La Ka Lay, Za Myin Zwe, and Bei Dar Beds are just the beginning.

We will continue to make stuff for those who appreciate thoughtful design, for those who share a passion for personal style, and who acts to improve their quality of life.
